Do your students know the difference between a definition and a description? Are you disappointed with your students’ explanations of science concepts? In this session, we will address these essential communication skills for science for elementary and middle school students (grades 3-8). Teachers in this workshop will receive templates and strategies to help address these issues, and will develop personalized resources they can use in their instruction throughout the school year. This session will focus on writing strategies and the inquiry process learning skills from the GLCE’s and HSCE’s. (Includes lunch and refreshments).
Participants in this workshop will receive a packet of resources that focus on different writing strategies to support student understanding in science. In addition to these resources, participants are asked to bring resources that they may have (lessons, textbook, sample classroom activities, etc.) that they would like to use to develop a writing task and rubric for their own classroom use. Participants may also wish to bring a laptop computer of their own to use the templates made available in this workshop and the creation of the writing task.
